
8x Performance, Zero Feed Fatigue: Messaging as the New Ad Surface
Marketing Messages is Meta’s first message-based advertising product. It allows businesses to send personalized, opt-in promotions through WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram Direct using pre-built templates including image, video, carousel, and shoppable messages. Managed through Meta Ads Manager, the format was designed to feel conversational rather than interruptive, establishing messaging as a new high-performance advertising surface.
Establishing messaging as Meta’s next performance channel
As the founding designer, I led the end-to-end design of Marketing Messages from concept to global scale. The team had no prior models or internal precedents for message-based ads, and the opportunity required coordination across monetization, messaging, and AI surfaces. I helped define the product strategy, vision, and systems required to make messaging a viable and trusted ad format across Meta's ecosystem.
Designing every layer from creation to delivery
I owned design for all critical components of the experience:
Advertiser setup within Meta Ads Manager, including campaign creation, subscriber controls, preview, and delivery configuration
A format system built for chat, including image, video, carousel, shoppable, and mixed media templates
Inbox and thread UX design across WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram Direct, including CTA logic and seen versus unseen states
Subscriber management tools to control opt-ins, message fatigue, and delivery timing
A horizontal design system that ensured consistency across messaging surfaces and reduced design fragmentation by thirty percent
AI-enhanced tools, experimentation systems, and privacy-safe delivery
To make Marketing Messages work at scale, I designed a suite of creative tools, systems, and compliance-ready flows that balanced performance with trust.
Advertisers needed help generating content that felt personal and converted. I built smart thumbnail optimization for video, emoji-enhanced copy variants, and scaffolding tools that could generate high-quality messages from just a few inputs. These tools increased message clarity, emotional tone, and open rates across formats.
On the backend, I redesigned the Marketing Message Toolkit to support predictive reporting, anomaly detection, and A/B testing. This experimentation system powered over 22,000 tests and helped refine message logic, creative variants, and delivery performance.
To support global rollout, I partnered with regional teams in LATAM, Europe, and APAC to adapt onboarding and creative flows. I also led the design of privacy-safe delivery in response to EU youth ad restrictions, protecting over seventy-six million dollars in daily revenue while maintaining compliance.
